“It keeps me going”: Jim’s volunteer story at the Brisbane Relief Hub
If you've visited the Brisbane Relief Hub recently, chances are you've seen Jim hard at work. The Hub provides practical support, essential items and a welcoming place for people in Brisbane doing it tough.
Whether he's fixing something that's broken, building a new storage solution, or lending a hand with the Red Bag Appeal, Jim is always the first to step in.
"I love doing all the jobs," Jim says with a smile. "Someone says, 'How do we do this?' and I think, 'That's easy, I'll do it.'"
His practical skills and willingness to help have become invaluable to the Relief Hub team. From repairing and improving the building to helping create a more welcoming environment, Jim's contribution touches almost every corner of the Hub.
What many people don't know is that volunteering has also become an important part of Jim's own journey.
After losing his wife, Jim found purpose through giving back. A close friend helped him pack away her belongings so they could be donated to people in need. As they finished, his friend said, "I think you should volunteer, Jim. I think it'll help."
"It keeps me going," he shares. "It keeps me happy."
"Jim has been an incredible support, especially during our move into the Brisbane Relief Hub's new home," says Penny, Relief Hub Manager. "Whether he's fixing, building or lending a hand wherever it's needed, he's always willing to help, and the difference he makes is seen and appreciated by everyone."
