For many visiting Wesley Mission Queensland’s Brisbane Relief Hub, a hot meal is more than food. It’s a chance to sit down, feel welcome, and know that someone cares.

At the heart of those meals is Chef Crystal, who spends two days each week preparing nutritious, home-cooked food. She pours love into every dish, intentionally serving food that restores dignity.

"Usually, if [people are] going to get a meal, they’re not expecting it to be colourful – they’re not expecting fruits and veggies," Crystal says.

The look of gratitude means a lot...it brings a little more hope to them, that even though they're in hard times, they can at least get a good feed.

Sadly, more families than ever are being forced to make impossible choices between paying bills, keeping a roof over their heads, and putting healthy food on the table. The Brisbane Relief Hub acts as a critical safety net, supporting over 600 people experiencing hardship each week.

Crystal sees firsthand the difference a warm meal can make. For some people, it may be the most nutritious meal they have all week. For others, it is a chance to sit with friends, share a conversation, and feel part of a community.

While a warm lunch brings people through the doors, it’s the wrap-around support that helps them get back on their feet. Beyond the dining room, visitors can access food hampers, essential toiletries, prescription medication subsidies, and financial resilience counselling.

Most importantly, it is a space entirely free of judgment. "Everyone’s circumstances are different, so when they're here, they’re not going to feel out of place," Crystal explains.

We're not going to judge you. When people are here, they're going to be treated like the human beings that they are.

Her passion for creating meals that nourish both body and soul shines through in everything she does, helping ensure every person who walks through our doors feels valued and cared for.
