How transport services can combat loneliness amongst seniors and disability clients

When you think of community transport services, you might picture cars or buses getting seniors from A to B. But for those who rely on Wesley Mission Queensland’s (WMQ) services, it's much more: it’s a lifeline for independence, a weekly dose of laughter, and often, friendship and connection.
Whether it’s taking clients for an early-morning lift to the doctor, shared grocery run with a familiar group of passengers, or a café catch-up that’s become a weekly highlight, our staff and volunteers don’t only drive – they genuinely care.
Not Just a ride
For many older Queenslanders and people with disabilities, being able to attend appointments or shop independently is about more than convenience — it’s about maintaining dignity. Transporter services help fill that gap when driving is no longer an option, and when relying on friends or family becomes difficult.
It’s a lifeline, and for some of our clients, the only social connection they’ll have all week.
It’s basically the same little crowd every time. And it’s great, you know? We get to do a little bit of shopping. Usually go for a coffee if we've got time. We just muddle along.

Even with just 14 vehicles, last year the transport services team logged 460,000 kilometres and completed around 27,000 trips. And demand continues to grow! This shows just how valued the service is in not only getting seniors to appointments, but helping them stay connected to their communities.
Strong team bonds that spread to clients
Behind every journey is a dedicated team of coordinators, drivers, and volunteers who show up for work to make someone’s day brighter – and the camaraderie among the team is infectious.
Long-time driver Jack happily announces that he’ll drive anything before his assistant Ros jokes back with “He drives me up the wall sometimes!” Jack beams.
I came from the corporate world where it was serious all the time, and now I'm having fun and making people laugh and smile.

Even in moments of grief or challenge, humour, kindness, and community spirit prevail. Clients certainly feel it too.
I've been using the service for about eight years with my sister. They’re always on time to pick you up. You don't even have to carry your parcels or anything. The staff are all lovely, no matter who you talk to.

As volunteer driver Jack puts it:
You wouldn't volunteer if you didn't care about people. We’re not here to just drive and go home. We’re here to connect.
Tara adds:
"We don’t just transport. We listen. We laugh. Sometimes we grieve. But above all, we show people they’re not alone."
Why it matters
Whether you’re someone needing support to get out and about, a carer looking for a reliable service, or someone wanting to volunteer — our Community Transport Services offer more than a lift.
It’s a community on wheels. A group of people who care. And a reminder that the little things — like a shared ride and a warm conversation — can make the biggest difference.
