Art from the Margins (AFTM) aims to empower artists living with mental health issues, physical or intellectual disabilities or those experiencing homelessness and social isolation.
Our program provides opportunities, giving a pathway to enrichment, personal growth and professional development through creative practice.
Established in 2008, Art from the Margins began as a program to support homeless artists through an art award and exhibition held at the Albert Street Uniting Church in Brisbane. With the support of Wesley Mission Queensland, AFTM has expanded its services and art prize to artists living with adversity throughout the Brisbane region and beyond.
Our vision is to transform the lives of those experiencing adversity and disability through the joy of art, by being a leading provider of visual arts programs and opportunities for disadvantaged artists in Queensland.
AFTM touches the lives of thousands of Queenslanders. Across the last financial year we saw:
332 talented artists display their artwork at one of our exhibition
1322 workshop participants attending either a specialised or weekly workshop to assist in combating social isolation, sharing their skills and/or gaining professional development
3354 people visit our gallery centrally located on Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley to enjoy the exhibitions and socialise
Our exhibitions provide a professional platform for artists to develop their creative practice and generate an income from their art by selling their work. We also understand the need to connect with a larger audience within the digital marketplace. That’s why we’re now offering online artworks for purchase via Shopify.
At AFTM, we're here to assist our artists build their self-confidence that carries over to all aspects of their lives.
