Reaching your limit as a primary carer and how respite can help

Caring for a loved one can be deeply meaningful but without regular breaks, it’s easy to reach your limit.

For many primary carers, that isn’t just a possibility; it’s the reality. The emotional, physical, and mental demands can build over time, especially when support feels out of reach.

Read the story and watch the video below.

When caring takes its toll

Rosemarie understands this all too well. As the full-time carer for her husband Neil, who lives with dementia, she has faced ongoing challenges while managing her own health concerns.

My husband Neil was diagnosed with dementia, and I am his full-time carer. I myself have health issues, so it has been a difficult journey.

As her health began to decline, Rosemarie recognised the need for change. Seeking respite care for Neil wasn’t an easy decision, but it became a necessary one.

"I often find myself on the cusp of chronic fatigue, that’s why I sought respite for my husband."

Finding support through respite care

While the challenges haven’t disappeared, the support has made a meaningful difference. With access to respite services, Rosemarie has begun to regain a sense of confidence and independence.

"On the weekend I was thinking of inviting a friend over for coffee, and I thought, well, that’s good—because I haven’t seen this friend for a long time. I just felt strong enough to actually reach out again."

Knowing that Neil is not only cared for at Hadden Place respite care centre, but genuinely enjoying his time in respite, has also helped ease Rosemarie’s worry and guilt.

I'm very happy that when he comes here [Hadden Place], he sincerely enjoys it. The staff are wonderful, the food’s great. He said once that it’s almost a home away from home.

"That really sums it up for both of us. I have peace of mind knowing he’s looked after, loved, and supported."

Support for carers matters too

Behind that experience is a team committed not just to those receiving care, but to the carers themselves. Staff members like Cheryl play an important role in providing both practical and emotional support.

Cheryl understands that caring extends beyond the individual, it includes supporting the wellbeing of the carer too. Without that support, the role can quickly become overwhelming.

With Cheryl’s support, Rosemarie has been able to reclaim small but meaningful parts of her life and find a sense of normalcy again.

It gives me a great sense of peace knowing that Cheryl has my back, that she’s aware of Neil, aware of my needs. She provides huge psychological and emotional support.

While the journey is still challenging, respite care has created space for Rosemarie to begin looking after her own health and wellbeing again.

Because sometimes, a little extra support can make all the difference.
