COVID-19 Recovery Service

Now more than ever, it’s important to seek support. The impact of COVID-19 has been devastating. If you’ve lost a job, suffered financially because of the economic downturn, or struggled with adapting to the ‘new normal’, all these challenges can feel enormous. Even more so when no one knows how long this pandemic will last. What we do know is it’s important to recognise if you’re experiencing negative effects of COVID-19. And support is available.

At Wesley Mission Queensland, our COVID-19 Recovery Service was established to provide responsive wellbeing support for people living in the Gold Coast region.

Our COV1D-19 Recovery Service may assist those:

  • Whose wellbeing has deteriorated due to COVID-19; for example, due to loss of income, loss of routine, social isolation, increased uncertainty, disrupted education, relationship and family issues
  • Who may be experiencing mental health decline and who are not already linked with mental health services
  • Who are supporting others, such as currently caring for someone affected by the impact of COVID-19 and need support or guidance.

Our COVID-19 Recovery Service team provides mental health support, linkages, referrals and practical assistance for anyone 16 years and over impacted by the ongoing effects of COVID-19. All sessions are confidential, allowing our trained and qualified mental health professionals to support your mental health and wellbeing, based on your specific needs. This may include:

  • Assistance with developing wellbeing strategies, life skills or goals
  • Coaching
  • Education
  • Practical support accessing services.

You can choose to have one session or six weeks of support, this can be tailored to your needs. Sessions are all offered Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm. If these hours don’t work for you, speak to us and we’ll do our best to arrange a more convenient time. Our Recovery Workers can meet with you in person, over the phone or online. 

You can access this service if you live in the Gold Coast region and are 16 years or older. We accept self-referrals and referrals from professionals (with consent from the individual).

The COVID-19 Recovery Service is fully funded by the Mental Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch, Queensland Health. This means there’s no out of pocket cost for you to access this service. You also don't need a Medicare card.

COVID-19 Recovery Service for Older People

Our COVID-19 Recovery Service for older people was established to provide responsive wellbeing support for people living in the Gold Coast region who are aged over 65 years (or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 55). Our service may assist:

  • Those experiencing loneliness who may need assistance reconnecting with social networks and early intervention to help them deal with low levels of situational distress
  • Others who may have more intense needs associated with ongoing mental health problems, which may require psychological therapies or referral to more specialised support
  • People who have physical health needs which interact with and exacerbate mental health issues, and which also require management.

 

The aim of this service is to: 

  • Promote and coordinate connections to services and support in the region for socially isolated older people
  • Improve access to physical and mental health services for isolated older people with mental health problems, including those who may have experienced service disruption due to COVID-19.

Our team provides mental health support, linkages, referrals and practical assistance. All sessions are confidential, allowing our trained and qualified mental health professionals to support your mental health and wellbeing, based on your specific needs. Service types include: 

  • Clinical nursing services: Establishing a therapeutic relationship in which to assess and manage mental and physical health needs including assessing health risks, monitoring medication, and providing support and information to carers
  • Care coordination: Promoting connections to needed services and supports, including helping to restore access to services and social networks where these have been disrupted by COVID-19
  • Psychological therapy: The provision of brief, evidence-based therapies appropriate to the identified needs of the individual 
  • Strengthen multidisciplinary care: Working closely with the individuals General Practitioners (GPs) and other support staff to improve the health response for the individual.

People can choose to have one session or six weeks of support - this can be tailored to the needs of the individual. Sessions are offered Monday – Friday, between the hours of 8:30am – 4:30pm. If these hours don’t work for you, speak to us and we’ll do our best to arrange a more convenient time. Our team can meet with you in person, over the phone or online.  

  • Gold Coast residents over 65 years (or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 55) living in the community who are experiencing social isolation and/or loneliness as a result of COVID-19 and who are at risk of, or have, experienced a decline in their mental health
  • Older carers of people with mental or physical health problems who have lost access to normal social networks and supports due to COVID-19.

This Initiative is fully funded by the Australian Government and is part of the mental health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is informed by the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Pandemic Response Plan released in May 2020. 

 As a fully funded service, there is no out of pocket cost for you to access this service. You also don't need a Medicare card.

FAQs

Initially you will be allocated a Recovery Worker who can meet with you to tailor the support to your needs. All the Recovery Workers within this service are trained and qualified mental health professionals. They will work with you on setting goals, with a focus on priority areas you would like help with.

The service doesn't directly address things like loss of income, loss of routine, social isolation, increased uncertainty, disrupted education, relationship and family issues, we can support you to access the services that do (for example, financial counselling services). 

Service types may include: 

  • Triage and Intake: secure and confidential triage and intake. Warm referral to external supports.
  • Care coordination: promoting connections to needed services and supports, including helping to restore access to services and social networks where these have been disrupted by COVID-19
  • Psychological therapy: the provision of brief, evidence-based therapies appropriate to the identified needs of the individual
  • Strengthen multidisciplinary care: working closely with the individuals General Practitioners (GPs) and other support staff to improve the health response for the individual

Older persons only 

  • Clinical nursing services: establishing a therapeutic relationship in which to assess and manage mental and physical health needs including assessing health risks, monitoring medication, and providing support and information to carers. 
The program aims to have no waitlist to access the service. However, at times you may need to leave a message on our intake line. We aim to respond within three working days to all initial enquiries.

Please keep in mind that our program does not operate to support crisis or emergency situations. If you feel that your matter is urgent, or if you are experiencing a mental health crisis please consider these options:

Yes, as long as the service/s you are already receiving do not duplicate what is offered under this service.

You need to be 16 years or older and be a resident in the Gold Coast region.  If you are under 16 years and are in distress, please call the Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800. For alternative services please visit your local GP. 

For older persons specific services you must be 65 years or older (or 55 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).

There is currently no wait list to access this service.
We understand that being the person who is supporting another person comes with its own difficulties. If you’re currently caring for someone negatively affected by COVID-19, and you would like support or guidance in your caring journey, our COVID-19 Recovery Service can support you.
