Christmas at Albert Street Uniting Church

Christmas is much more than one day of the year. Before Christmas comes, the church has a season of four weeks of waiting, which we call Advent. During this time we recall our hope and expectation for the coming of Christ, past, present and future. It is an excellent way to lead into Christmas celebrations.

Advent services starting from Sunday, December 3:

  • Sundays at 9am followed by morning tea
  • Sundays at 11am
  • Sundays at 6.30pm followed by supper

Advent is a time of looking forward and waiting for something greater; for the annual celebration of Christ’s birth and the time when Christ will return. During this season we light Advent candles on the Advent wreath. The circle of the wreath symbolises God, while each candle represents one quality: hope, peace, joy and love. Each week we light one more candle than the last until we light the centre candle on Christmas Day to symbolise Christ’s light coming into the world.

Christmas celebrations:

  • Christmas Eve at 6pm and 11pm
  • Christmas Day at 9am

The twelve days of Christmas begins on Christmas Day, December 25, and finishes at the celebration of Epiphany, January 6. During this time we still sing Christmas songs and celebrate the wonder of God with Us. We share the stories of the birth and infancy of Christ. Please join us!

  • Sunday December 3: Christmas 1 - 9am Worship service followed by morning tea

  • Sunday January 7: First Sunday after Epiphany - 9am Worship service followed by morning tea

Epiphany is celebrated 12 days after Christmas on January 6 2018 and is when the wise men visit Jesus. After Epiphany we celebrate the time when Jesus is baptised some 30 years later by John the Baptist. Epiphany means “revelation” and both the visit of the wise men and Jesus’s baptism are important times when Jesus was ‘revealed’ to the world.

Christmas is much more than one day of the year. Come along and experience the full season with us as we celebrate the wonder of incarnation.
