Right now, almost half a million Queenslanders live on or below the poverty line. So how can you help?
Why not join hundreds of other like-minded people by taking part in Wesley Mission Queensland’s annual Red Bag Appeal.
The launch of the 2019 Red Bag Appeal took place in King George Square in Brisbane City. We were joined by Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner, Lady Mayoress of Brisbane Nina Schrinner and players from the Brisbane Lions to show their support for a great cause.

This year, there is a big challenge. The aim is to fill 5,000 bags this Christmas to give to Queenslanders that are struggling to make ends meet. This is an extra 1,500 Red Bags from last year.
Items in the bag include simple non-perishable grocery items, toys and decorations. It’s a gift to be shared with those who need it in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The launch coincided with Anti-Poverty Week to help raise public awareness of poverty within our community and a Red Bag pop-up shop was open for lunch-time passersby to fill a Red Bag themselves or donate to the appeal.

Wesley Mission Queensland General Manager of Fundraising Paul Reis said the Red Bag Appeal is more than just a handout to people in need.
“The appeal is an opportunity for the Brisbane community to come together and give dignity, respect and the spirit of Christmas to those individuals and families who are doing it tough,” Mr Reis said.
“The need in our community has never been greater. We all know that there are many extra costs associated with Christmas that really add up and for those families who are just making ends meet, they may not be able to afford Christmas food or presents for the kids.
“This is our fifth year doing the appeal and we are always overwhelmed by the generosity of the Brisbane community and our corporate and small business supporters and we hope people will give generously again this year.”
The Red Bag Appeal runs from 15 October to 29 November. The bags will be distributed to clients from a range of our community services including the Emergency Relief Hub in the Fortitude Valley, Elorac Place at Carole Park, Eagleby Family Services and the Robina Youth and Parenting Hub, in the lead up to Christmas.
Red Bags are available from National Storage facilities in Capalaba, Fortitude Valley, Kedron, Mt Gravatt, Oxley, Yatla, Rothwell and Milton, which are also the drop-off points for donations of grocery items and toys.
We would like to thank our sponsors RTL Trades, National Storage and Drakes Supermarkets for their support.
We are excited to spread the Christmas cheer and joy and make Red Bag Appeal 2019 the best year yet! Join us and help make someone’s Christmas.
